Queensberry Wedding Albums – Engagement Edition

“There are two men inside the artist, the poet and the craftsman. One is born a poet. One becomes a craftsman.” - Emile Zola

As I have become more confident in my skills as a photo-documentarian and artist, the need to better curate my work has increased dramatically. In my view, the value of photography as an art form lives in how we present photographs. This presentation speaks to how we honor our stories and embody them for future generations. Recently, our studio began working with Queensberry to produce our custom and hand-crafted albums.

Founded in 1969 by Heather Baugh, this New Zealand based and family owned business delivers the finest wedding albums I have experienced to date.  Additionally, Queensberry offers unparalleled customer service and their presentation materials are a pleasure to showcase during our studio consultations. A few weeks back, I shared the New York Engagement Story of Janet & Chip. After seeing their proofs, the couple decided to commission two 9×9 matted albums to present as wedding gifts for their parents. With the support of Queensberry, we were able to custom design and receive these exquisite parent albums in record time…

Each Queensberry album is individually shipped in a gift box. A vellum leaflet is enclosed detailing best practices for the care and maintenance of your album. Online proofing serves my clients and their wedding guests remarkably well, however, this technology is a basic standard offered by most studios. For the digital age, Queensberry albums are a clear and present reminder that print is NOT dead and craftsmanship is NOT digital. There is truly no digital or mass produced alternative to a classic hand-crafted album.

===========================

Letterpress branding, coarse archival papers and other under-stated details further accentuate the craftsmanship of every album.

===========================

Album cover materials include: silk, leather, suede, micro-leather and buckram. For their albums, Janet and Chip commissioned the “Raspberry” silk cover with gold motif backing around the central cover image. Each pagemount is fitted with metal edges to better preserve and protect the pages.

===========================

With pagemount album design, each photograph is individually matted with a custom-sized overlay.  Janet and Chip selected the “Ivory” matte color with a “Mist” overlay for their design. For your consideration, all photographs are finished with a thin protective coating that offers increased durability to the images.

===========================

My photographic style is understated. Working with album craftspeople who incorporate this value into their presentation and is very important to me.

===========================

This is one of my favorite page layouts in the entire album. I appreciate the subtle hints of gold in the photographs and the presentation on the page.

===========================

This past week, I had the pleasure of meeting with Magnum Photographer Constantine “Costa” Manos. As Costa explained, mediocrity is in great supply across many creative industries not excluding photography and book design/craftsmanship. As we spoke, Costa was himself was refitting a better quality and newly designed jacket onto American Color 2; his latest book set for release July 15th, 2010.

As one the few living photographers to have served under Henri Carier Bresson, Costa began his career at Magnum Photos in 1963. In his words, “A successful photo is something you have never seen before and will never see again”. Right now, we are living at a time where millions of images are uploaded to the internet daily. Considering the ubiquity of photography, it is important that we all continue to honor the legacy and craft of this work in its professional form.

For this reason, I am overjoyed by my studios collaboration with the artists and craftspeople at Queensberry. Together our work provides a greater added value for my discerning family of clients like Janet & Chip. Although photography and albums will never replace the real life experience of your celebration, both elements serve to highlight and document these fleeting “magic moments” of your story.

The Audacity of Humanity

April 7, 2010

“You not only have given Megan and I a visual document of our magical moment, but have put into words what it was like to experience that moment.” - George

As a photographer, I document stories about people who continually make ideas happen, share ideas worth spreading and live remarkable love stories. A few weeks ago, I was invited to submit an article to a project called The Audacity of Humanity. The resulting eBook features over 35 authors, ages 10 to 63, from 5 continents and is available to download for free.

My story about “engagement” and photography is featured on pages 8-9. The Audacity of Humanity was edited by TED fellow Dr.Kyra Gaunt. As a mentor, Kyra continually challenges me to find my voice and share my story. Below is the video about her leadership in the classroom and the community:

A photograph from New York engagement of Megan & George is included with my article. This couple is responsible for helping me re-discover my attraction to engagement photography. Working with them allowed me to more intimately engage with meaning of my work as a lifestyle & wedding photographer. Simply stated, I document remarkable love stories and the people who make them possible.

Please download the The Audacity of Humanity eBook when you have a moment.

New York Engagement Story – The Metropolitan Museum of Art

April 4, 2010

“The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” - Saint Augustine

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Some of us are born travelers. We seek the thrill of far away lands, diverse cultural interactions, exotic foods and constant change. For some, the idea of trading your comfortable Upper West Side apartment or familiar Texas bachelor pad for a 1 way ticket to Singapore is irrational and threatening.

For Patty and Jamie, this reality is a dream come true. A few days ago, the newly engaged couple arrived in Singapore, their new home. Right now, I miss them both a lot. What follows is a collection of photographs and words from their New York engagement photography story at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is home to one of the finest art collections in the world. Their extensive collection includes, “more than two million works of art spanning five thousand years of world culture, from prehistory to the present and from every part of the globe.” For their engagement photography session, the couple decided to visit the MET because it was the location of their first date. This is their story…

Entering the great halls of Egyptian art, the sense of majesty that invades your senses. You can see the palatial hall at once inviting and serene; hear the faint echo of antiquity in its stillness, smell mystery of encrypted hieroglyphs and touch ancient walls that have stood longer than any nation in history (artifacts within the exhibit date back to 2650 B.C.) Patty and Jamie were immediately drawn to this location as the starting point for their New York engagement photography session.

Patty and Jamie share a quiet moment at the New America Wing of the Museum.

Patty has an quiet yet radiant beauty. As Jamie says, “I was very much attracted to her the first time I saw her…her charisma, the way she carries herself!” This is one of the few images Patty requested for herself and I am very pleased with the playfulness presented in this moment.

Patty and Jamie overlook the museum before exiting by taxi to Patty’s home on the Upper West Side.

===========================

Although the weather was far from ideal, Patty and Jamie made the best of it. They chose enjoy themselves where others might have focused on the coldness and the rain. This made their engagement photography session even more dynamic and memorable to document.

As a teenager, one of Patty’s most trusted High School teachers in Taiwan, suggested that she move to the United States. The teacher believed this move would allow Patty to further advance her education and pursue a career.  Ten years ago, the teacher would travel to visit Patty in California. Patty was late in late picking her up from the airport. When the teacher’s son called Patty, he was irate that his mother and sister were made to wait…

Little did either of them know, they would meet face to face a decade later at a mutual friends birthday party. This chance meeting helped sparked a connection spanning Taiwan, California, Manhattan, Texas and now Singapore. To think, Patty and Jamie arrived in the United States to pursue the “American Dream” and have returned to Asia to make it a reality.

For months, Patty and Jamie communicated via Skype well into the wee hours of the morning. Before their wedding celebration, the couple decided to move to singapore and start a life together. This was their last full day together in New York City.

The moment Patty contacted me, I knew the three of us would have a great time together. In one of her earliest emails she wrote, “You are not just taking pictures, you are telling a love story with the photos. This is exactly what we are looking for. And you took the initiative to want to learn and understand each love story, which we believe is the only way to capture the essence of a relationship.” Since this New York engagement photography experience, I’ve come to appreciate how the role of travel has emerged as a consistent theme for many of the couples I collaborate with.

I’m so grateful that I was able to document this memorable moment in their lives.
