Weekend in the Berkshires | A Wedding Story

March 3, 2011

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

LENOX, MA — I first met Nicolina and Luke the day they were engaged at Grand Central Station in 2009. That moment set the stage for what has become one of my favorite weddings….ever (there I said it). Their celebration included 3 days of festivities and was held in the Berkshires at Stonover Farm. This exquisite bed and breakfast served as the play grounds for the “fun in the field” activities, dinner reception, dance party (with DJ Christopher Sealy) and the send-off (with warm apple cider).

Behind the Scenes
For this film we wanted to capture the physical and intangible aspects of beauty that made the celebration so remarkable. The rustic yet sophisticated charm of Stonover Farm, rich automnal lighting and gilded decor helped create an evening of enchantment. Most noticeably, the spirit of love among gathered friends and family reverberated throughout the courses of celebration. I’m so thankful for Nicolina, Luke, their families, friends and the outstanding professionals who helped make this celebration possible. My sincerest wish is that we’ve honored the story of Nicolina and Luke in the film you see above.

Our Approach to Wedding Film
Our team began creating short-films to explore the “behind the scenes” moments that make remarkable love stories possible. Unlike traditional wedding video, our unobtrusive style of creating wedding films is story-driven and documentary; each film includes an original score, personal interviews and unobtrusive photographs from your celebration. The result is an artisanal film collection celebrating your wedding story as it naturally unfolded.

For the Future
In 2011, our studio is available to collaborate with 3-5 select couples in creating a wedding film. To inquire, tell me more about your story.

Special Thanks to:

Event Design and Planner: Lisa Light
Floral Design: Ariella Chezar
Reception Venue: Stonover Farm
Dress: Oscar de la Renta
Catering: Mezze Restaurant Group

UPDATES: The wedding story of Nicolina and Luke was just featured on The Brides Cafe.

In Search of Perfection…

“Love is knowing someones faults and imperfections and still thinking that they’re perfect”- Sejal

TRIBECA, NY — The elevator was broken. I felt embarrassed and awkward at the thought of Sejal walking up five flights, through the narrow, low-ceilinged stairwell for our first meeting. Reaching for my cell phone and was surprised to see Sejal standing at the top of the staircase in a faded green army jacket. In that moment, I was impressed, thankful and relieved that she was smiling. Working with her and Krishna for their wedding anniversary session, was a lesson in perfection…

For their wedding anniversary story, we focused on a relaxed and conversational approach. The day began inside their home and we casually moved to their rooftop for a better view of New York City.

This is one of the first moments I documented during Sejal and Krishna's wedding anniversary session. Married in 2008, their wedding celebration was held in Atlanta, GA at the Omni Hotel.

Just before we headed outside to face the bustling streets of New York, Krishna's phone rang. Waiting patiently, Sejal moved closer to the Chandelier in their building lobby. What some might call a "mistake" or interruption became a remarkable moment of their wedding anniversary session.

LEFT: arriving at the South Street Seaport, Sejal and Krishna enjoy a relaxing moment away from the "noise" of New York.

RIGHT: The "gold" room as we joked, offered rich warm accent to Sejal's dress. Although this was a wedding anniversary session, whenever I look at this photograph I think: wedding, bride and elegant. Funny enough, I almost didn't take the photo at all.

Just outside their home, Sejal and Krisha cross from Broad Street to Wall Street. The quality of engagement in Krishna's gaze is magnetic. You can feel the warmth as he looks to Sejal...New York City seems fades to a queit blur and he doesn't have care in the world.

Sejal adjusts her dress before continuing our walking tour through downtown New York to the South Street Seaport.

Sejal and Krishna enjoy a view of the sunset at the South Street Seaport.

Sejal and Krishna share an individual willingness to make the best of their experiences together….for better or worse. For example, their multi-day celebration was a great expense of time, money, energy and effort but their wedding photography experience didn’t go as they’d planned. Sejal once commented: “I don’t really feel myself when I look at these from my pictures of me from my wedding.” After reviewing over 5,000 images from their wedding photographer Krishna shared, “I’d be much happier to have 15-20 amazing wedding photographs instead.” Rather than casting blame on their wedding photographer or complaining about the situation, they proactively chose to document their new experiences together in New York City.

As a child my mother would say, “if you want to make god laugh, tell him your plans”.  Elevators break before client meetings, work calls occur during photography sessions and wedding photographers make mistakes that affect entire families. However frustrating, difficult or embarrassing, these things happen. Discovering how to transform these difficult moments into opportunities is a skill that Sejal and Krishna embody. Overall, I’m thankful for having collaborated with them and to continue my work with couples who choose vulnerability over anger; forgiveness over cold-heartedness and the pursuit of happiness over the search for perfection.

New York Wedding Story | A Modern Classic

January 12, 2011

wedding, new york wedding, wedding photography, new york wedding photography, new york wedding photographer, new york athletic club wedding, new york, ny“The ritual of marriage is not simply a social event; it is a crossing of threads in the fabric of fate. Many strands bring the couple and their families together and spin their lives into a fabric that is woven on their children.” – Anonymous

MIDTOWN, NY —  Molly is calm (playful even) as she paces the guest room inside the New York Athletic Club. Just past Bryant Park, Sean and his band of merry groomsmen are getting ready at the New York Yacht Club . This is their story…

Molly’s real “first dance” was less traditional than most but helped carry the upbeat spirit of the day.

This photograph was captured by a brilliant New York wedding photographer and my friend Robert Wagner.

Founded in 1868, The New York Athletic Club recalls a manner of New York City that is easy to overlook in an ever modernizing world. Designed by York and Sawyer, the building is a twenty-one story legacy of grand interior design and architectural wonder.

Minutes later, his wife’s hands can be seen affixing a boutonniere to his tuxedo jacket. Before nightfall, their daughter and only child will be married. The experience watching your child (all grown up) and getting married is one that I look forward to.

Molly’s expression in this image is a conversation in itself.

Watching her move into position near the window, I glimpse this moment and click the shutter instinctively. As a wedding photographer, I enjoy delivering images that offer an abstract (more poetic) perspective of a wedding story.

wedding, new york wedding, wedding photography, new york wedding photography, new york athletic club wedding, new york wedding photographer, wedding photographer, wedding dress, bride, new york, nyThis is one of my favorite bridal portraits to date. Considering my style of wedding photography, I’m especially drawn to photographs of the Kennedy wedding. John F. Kennedy was the first president to actively use photojournalism to document his legacy. In many ways, his wedding gave rise to documentary wedding photography in the United States.

The wedding ceremony was presided over by a close family friend Father McPhail. Wedding photography is often a documentation of moments surrounding the wedding ceremony (as opposed to the ceremony itself). This photograph of the ceremony is among my favorites from the day.

Overall, the legacy of New York played a huge part of this wedding story. From the beginning, Molly and Sean offered vivid memories about childhood visits to Central Park, late night parties with friends and weekend afternoons with family around town.

wedding, new york wedding, wedding photography, new york wedding photography, new york wedding photographer, new york athletic club weddingThe celebration continued well into the night with amazing music from the live band. They even did a rendition of “I’m Shipping Up To Boston” (theme song from The Departed) which really heated up the dance floor. As their wedding photographer, I actively pursued a personal and story-driven connection. The resulting wedding photography collection is similar to New York City in that its altogether classic yet modern.

Looking back on this experience, I’m thankful to Sean for first contacting me (then calling again months later), Molly for her laid back demeanor and clarity, their parents for entrusting me to document this family story, The New York Athletic Club for its wonderful staff and Robert Wagner for his amazing support (and skill) as a wedding photographer. Also, a thank you to all the guests who showed me a great time and made me feel welcomed.
